Why Is My Boiler Losing Pressure in Norwich — And How to Fix It

Low boiler pressure is one of the most common heating issues Norwich homeowners face — particularly during cold weather when the heating is running at full capacity. If your boiler has shut off and the pressure gauge is reading below 1 bar, the good news is that you can often fix it yourself. But if the pressure keeps dropping, there's likely an underlying issue that needs a professional.

What Pressure Should Your Boiler Be?

Your boiler pressure should sit between 1.0 and 1.5 bar when the system is cold, rising slightly when the heating is on. If it drops below 0.5 bar, most boilers will shut off as a safety precaution. Above 2.5-3.0 bar, the pressure relief valve will discharge water to protect the system.

Common Causes of Low Boiler Pressure in Norwich

A leak in the system

The most common cause. Even a tiny leak from a radiator valve, pipe joint, or the boiler's internal heat exchanger will slowly drop the pressure. Check all visible pipework and radiator valves for signs of water — particularly in older Norwich properties in areas like Thorpe St Andrew and Sprowston where original pipework may be corroding.

Faulty pressure relief valve (PRV)

The PRV releases water if pressure gets too high. If it's faulty, it may let water escape at normal pressure. Check the copper pipe that exits the boiler through the external wall — if it's dripping, the PRV needs replacing.

Failing expansion vessel

The expansion vessel absorbs pressure changes. If it fails, pressure fluctuates and the PRV repeatedly discharges. Common in boilers over 7-10 years old.

Recently bled radiators

Releasing air from radiators also releases pressure. Simply repressurise the system after bleeding.

How to Repressurise Your Boiler (DIY)

  1. Switch off the boiler and let it cool
  2. Find the filling loop — a braided hose connecting two pipes under or near the boiler
  3. Open both valves slowly
  4. Watch the pressure gauge and stop at 1.2-1.5 bar
  5. Close both valves
  6. Switch the boiler back on

Check your boiler manual for specific instructions — some modern boilers have integrated filling loops rather than external ones.

When to Call a Gas Safe Engineer in Norwich

Repressurising is safe to do yourself, but you need a professional if:

  • The pressure keeps dropping after you've topped it up — there's a leak to find
  • Pressure rises above 3 bar when the heating is on — the expansion vessel or PRV may be faulty

  • The boiler makes gurgling, banging, or clicking noises
  • The boiler displays a fault code
